Spooktacular Mummy Dogs

I know, I know there have been a lot of Halloween themed recipes recently but bear with me. I get asked a lot for ideas on how to make food more fun for kids. Even though I am sharing these recipes at Halloween, they can be made any day of the year to entice little tiny humans to enjoy food and get them eating different things.

These Mummy dogs are super easy and fun. My son who wouldn’t touch anything to do with pastry now likes it and is opening his mind to foods like quiche and so on. Any exposure to new foods now matter how small can be beneficial.

You can use hot dogs for this recipe or regular sausages. I’m using hot dogs for ease but also because my son who ate nothing but sausages for a year now won’t touch them but will however eat a hot dog. I don’t pretend to understand the workings of a five year old mind but I go with what he likes. As long as he is eating I am happy.

Spooktacular mummy dogs are a play on a sausage roll and a great Halloween party food. There can be too much emphasis on sweets at Halloween so we always have a proper meal before or after trick or treating, before any sugar gets consumed. It’s just a rule in this house at Halloween.

SPOOKTACULAR MUMMY DOGS

  • 1 roll of pre-rolled puff pastry
  • 1 packet of hot dogs, or sausages
  • candy eyes, I use white chocolate drops and some coloured icing pens to make the eyes
  • ketchup

THE HOW

Heat the oven to 180°C (fan oven).

Roll out the puff pastry and cut into thin strips.

Roll the pastry strips around the sausage leaving room for the eyes. Pop onto a baking tray and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and the sausage and pastry cooked through.

Remove from the oven and cool.

When cool, add a dab of ketchup to the bottom of the eyes and stick in place on the sausage dogs to look like a mummy. Serve with ketchup.
